[The Friday Find – A new series that covers fascinating innovations and amazing creations in the world of Mobile business and technology]
The iPhone has got us addicted to shooting pictures, editing them, sharing them and has singlehandedly raised a generation of people who have made “selfies” a national occupation.
And videos were never going to be far behind. With the introduction of HD in the iPhone 4, graduations, vacations, weddings, simple everyday moments all became an occasion to capture and cherish. With a big exception as scores of amateur smartphone photographers and viewers found out – videos shot on handheld devices were shaky, jumpy and many times, a pain to watch; let alone cherish.
Video-editing softwares that used image stabilizing algorithms to solve these problems, took up massive processing power and were battery hogs. A scenario, unimaginable on smartphones till Alex Karpenko from Instagram hit upon the idea of using the iPhone’s gyroscope as an alternative to complex algorithms.
And voila, Hyperlapse was born. It was released as a stand-alone app from Instagram., their second after Bolt. With a UI that’s almost bare, Hyperlapse works wonders and produces smooth time-lapse videos, worthy of an award. Yes, all amateurs rejoice!!
Since its release, it has been put through many a ’tests’ from eager users. Hyperlapse has braved locations from midtown Manhattan to an African safari to emerge a winner.
Sorry, Android users. You will have a wait as the Android version requires API changes.
But, for the iOS world, in the words of Instagram co-founder and CEO, Kevin Systrom, “This is cool.”
