The futuristic technology that it is, the Internet of Things (IoT), is bound to redefine what we thought was possible in the area of artificial intelligence and personal digital assistance. When mobile devices form a part of an IoT network, the sky is the limit for the amazing things that can be made to happen to improve daily life conveniences. In this post, you’ll see how typical habits of people can be detected by the component devices of an IoT and used to reach the next level of sophistication in “smart” environments.
These are just five examples — There could be scope for many more:
Picture this – For the past two weeks, you’ve been listening to jazz music in the evenings and classical in the early mornings. Wouldn’t it be great if your stereo system at home could recognize this recurring pattern and automatically create playlist suggestions based on the time of the day? Or, if it could tune in to the right radio channel at the said time? Better yet, what if the same could be communicated to your mobile device as well? Another example could be getting a reminder on your phone when it’s time for your favorite TV show.
If you typically work out at 7 am every morning, your smartphone could track this using various fitness activity sensors. The phone can relay information about the activity you’ve accomplished each day. Smart refrigerators and other food storage containers can also detect if the nutritional supplements you take are out of stock or beyond their expiry dates, and even place orders for the delivery of the same!
Smart networked devices can do a number of things for you. Knowing when you’ve relocated to a new city and monitoring the weather conditions in that location, means that they can automatically increase or decrease the temperature that your heating and air condition system sets. They can even help you find places nearby to buy warm clothing. Your smart devices can become your personal comfort assistants!
If a diabetic person has her wearable glucose-monitoring device trigger on her smartphone, she can receive an alert to bring along insulin shots whenever she’s leaving home. This could save her from suffering a health issue if her blood glucose rises in the next few hours.
Are you someone who takes an outdoor trip every weekend? Why not have your smartphone suggest new trails each weekend and things you need to take with you based on the terrain and weather? Have the same communicated to your smart devices at home to alert you regarding items that you should stock up on. They can also automatically turn off or set their properties accordingly when you’re away from home for the specified duration. Travelling never required less preparation!
These are just a few examples that show how smartphones, smart homes, and smart lifestyles use the powerful combination of IoT and Mobility. Tracking “habits” will become a buzzword in the future as we make networked devices “intelligent” and “aware” enough to tell us what we need, even before we realize that we need it. Even better, they can help us meet these needs with minimal manual intervention!
