What is the most serious concern that any organization will raise while discussing enterprise mobility? Mobile platforms? User experience? Interoperability? All these are important. But security tops the list!

There are mainly three components to consider while talking about security – device, app and data. Each of these components has to be dealt with discretion while thinking of security. Enterprises have adopted different methods to deal with mobile security. App wrapping is an integral piece of mobile app management.

It’s more like chocolate wrapping! Chocolate wrappers offer a protective layer on chocolate. Similarly, an app wrapper is an extra layer on top of a regular mobile app that offers security and management features.

Why wrap an app?

You might now wonder why would anyone choose app wrappers over MDM that gives more control to enterprises. An MDM solution, traditionally, controls the entire device. When the entire device is under scrutiny, especially in BYOD scenarios, some of these policies intrude into and control the personal mobile apps that user has installed in the device. This means, the IT team will have control on the user’s personal data. Well, none of us are comfortable with that! We would rather have the IT team control only the enterprise mobile apps and the associated data. So, app wrappers are the way to go! BYOD and COPE are best supported by app wrapping.

Where do wrappers sit?

Wrappers for mobile apps can implemented at the device level or at the server level. Device level implementation may not be feasible for an enterprise as it calls for individual attention to each device incase of app upgrades, bug fixes, maintenance etc.  So enterprises choose to avoid the laborious device level implementation of app wrappers.

The other available option is to implement wrappers in the server at app level. This gives the IT team a free hand to control all the wrapped mobile apps. App monitoring, data monitoring, app ugrades and maintenance activities could be collectively carried out on all the devices saving time, effort and cost for the IT team.

What can wrappers do?

The most common functionalities of app wrappers are:

  • Offer multi-layer security around mobile apps
  • User authentication
  • App level encryption
  • Remotely remove the application from the device and wipe out data
  • Control the use of location data, cameras, microphones
  • Control the specific functions like cut, copy, paste etc.

A wrapper can secure everything related to an app without interfering with any personal app or data on the device. It is most ideal as it doesn’t make the user conscious about personal data getting compromised.

So would you lock the users’ device or wrap your enterprise mobile app?
