It was a windy, cold afternoon in Boston, the day after a snowstorm that had dumped 2 feet of snow. In a hurry to get back into my car after grabbing lunch, and thinking about the meeting I had to make it to, I backed out – right into a truck parked behind my car.

There was no damage to the truck but my car wasn’t so lucky.

Then we went through the usual procedures – the driver and I. We exchanged our license, registration and insurance information. I clicked pictures of all these documents on my phone, glad that I didn’t have to stand in the cold and write it all down because I was sure that my numb fingers couldn’t have handled a pen.

The next day as I started filling in the crash report, painstaking copying information from the photo of the driver’s license onto the online form, it hit me (no pun intended) – maybe I should be asking more of my smartphone.

Why couldn’t I have a mobile app that would let me upload the image of the license, run it through an OCR process to capture the license image as text and automatically populate that information in the report?

We could take it a step further and run the OCR process on the vehicle registration, the insurance document and prepopulate that too on the form.

And the ultimate aim – integrate all this information, attach the pictures of the vehicle damage and send a claim form to the insurance company and a copy to the report to the RMV.

A mobile app to alleviate at least some of the pain associated with an unfortunate incident such as an accident!
