Ever heard of this?

Take a second chance. I am sure you will recognize SMAC – Social, Mobile, Analytics and Cloud. So what is T ?

Time up!

‘T’ stands for Things from IoT, i.e. Internet of Things. So in the days ahead, it is going to be Social, Mobile, Analytics, Cloud and Things. Sounds like a huge deal! Doesn’t it?

Godfathers of SMAC would have never expected something like this! Intentions of taking advantage of how people behave and respond will get a different dimension when ‘things’ get added to the picture.

The changes ‘T’ brings to the table

Are we as a race ready to co-exist with connected things? Well, we have begun with watches and televisions. And it is slowly getting extended to other things in our daily lives.

What does this mean to businesses?

McKinsey Global Institute predicts the Internet of Things will be worth $2.7 trillion to $6.2 trillion by 2025 (McKinsey Global Institute, Disruptive technologies: Advances that will transform life, business, and the global economy, May 2013).

So if you take a closer look, the three most fundamental aspects of IoT are sensors, cloud and data. Sensors will let you control and manage anything you need. The influx of petabytes of data from all these connected devices is sure to disrupt the existing cloud technologies.

Beyond the endless possibilities of IoT, is there a deciding factor?

The kind of intelligence that each business draws will be the key factor deciding the level of infiltration of IoT in our daily lives. Which means, not everything will be connected, only those things that are important will be connected!

Nevertheless, SMAC will embrace ‘things’ and our future will reflect the transformation it brings about!
